Why Essays Stay With Us

The books we remember most vividly are not always the longest ones.

Sometimes it is the essay that makes one clear point, says it beautifully, and then quietly leaves the room. Those are the pages we keep thinking about later, often while walking, cooking, or trying to remember a sentence we meant to write down.
